The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) continues its response efforts to the Newcastle disease outbreak identified at a commercial turkey farming establishment located in the municipality of Nova Itaberaba (SC).

Among the measures adopted is the publication of MAPA Ordinance No. 962/2026, which declares a zoosanitary state of emergency for a period of 60 days in the municipalities of Nova Itaberaba, Águas Frias, Coronel Freitas, and Nova Erechim, in Santa Catarina.

The Mapa also officially notified the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) of the occurrence and informed bilateral trading partners about the outbreak, sharing initial technical information about the event and the sanitary measures adopted.

The sanitary depopulation of the affected facility began on 19 October and was completed on 20. Cleaning and disinfection procedures at the facilities are currently underway, in accordance with the applicable sanitary protocols.

At the same time, epidemiological surveillance and monitoring of properties located in the sanitary restriction area are ongoing, in addition to the control of the movement of animals and other materials subject to the established sanitary regulations.

Emergency response actions involve the coordinated work of professionals from the Santa Catarina Integrated Agricultural Development Company (Cidasc), Mapa, the Municipal Government, the Civil Police, and the Santa Catarina Institute of Agricultural Health (Icasa). The teams carry out operational activities, epidemiological surveillance, and support for containment measures.

The coordinated efforts of Mapa and Santa Catarina’s official veterinary service seek to prevent the spread of the disease and preserve the health status of Brazilian poultry farming.
