Article illustration — Illustration 1The Costa Rican Chamber of Pig Producers (CAPORC) called for strengthening animal welfare, biosecurity, and good management practices on pig farms in Costa Rica. According to the Chamber, disease prevention and the proper use of veterinary medicines are essential components of comprehensive health management, which includes adequate feed, permanent access to water, appropriate facilities, good ventilation, vaccination, cleaning and disinfection, control of access to farms, and veterinary support.

“Responsible pig farming starts with a preventive approach to animal health. Strengthening welfare, biosecurity, and good management practices helps reduce health risks, detect problems early, and make more informed decisions on farms”, explained Luis Diego Rojas Hernández, vice president of CAPORC.

Regarding antibiotic resistance, the Chamber recalled that their use must address a health need and take place under veterinary guidance. The goal is not to eliminate these medications from veterinary medicine, but to preserve their usefulness through proper diagnosis and prevention. “The challenge is to use them responsibly and complement their use with prevention, diagnosis, biosecurity, and good practices that help keep animals healthy”, Rojas added.
