Diarrhea in chickens is an old and familiar topic, but many poultry farmers still do not know what to do when their chickens have diarrhea. Let’s discuss this issue again and introduce some common methods for treating diarrhea in chickens.
I. Medication
1. Antibiotics. Antibiotics are commonly used to treat diarrhea in chickens. Common ones include neomycin, oxytetracycline, enrofloxacin, amoxicillin, ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and norfloxacin.
2. Chinese patent medicines
With the development of antibiotic resistance, many people now also choose to administer antibiotics together with traditional Chinese medicine. For example: Likang Jianke + neomycin; Likang Jianke has the effects of clearing heat and drying dampness, stopping bleeding, and relieving dysentery, and has some efficacy for diarrhea caused by various factors.
II. Folk remedies
1. Oral rehydration salts. Diarrhea causes chickens to lose water, and in severe cases can lead to dehydration. Sick chickens can be given oral rehydration salts to replenish lost fluids, improve their disease resistance, and relieve diarrhea symptoms.
2. Vinegar water
The acidic substances in vinegar can promote intestinal peristalsis in chickens and help eliminate excess water and toxins from the body, thereby alleviating diarrhea symptoms.
3. Garlic water
The alkaloids in garlic can stimulate chickens’ stomachs and promote digestion and absorption. They can also inhibit the growth and reproduction of bacteria, helping to alleviate diarrhea symptoms. Chop the garlic, add it to water and bring it to a boil. Then strain the garlic water and pour it into a drinking container so the chickens can drink freely.
4. Brown sugar water
Brown sugar water can help repair the intestinal mucosa of chickens and alleviate diarrhea symptoms. You can add brown sugar directly to the drinking water and let the sick chickens drink it throughout the day for 4~5 days in a row.
5. Ginger slices
Gingerol in ginger can stimulate chickens’ gastrointestinal tract and promote digestion and absorption. It can also inhibit the growth and reproduction of bacteria, helping to alleviate diarrhea symptoms. Cut fresh ginger into thin slices and place them in a drinking container so the chickens can drink freely.
The above are the treatment measures for chicken diarrhea. Depending on the severity of the diarrhea, we can choose to use medication or traditional remedies to treat it and resolve the chickens’ diarrhea problem.
