In Brazil, the regulation of maximum tolerated levels of mycotoxins in feed for food-producing animals is established by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), with emphasis on Normative Instruction (IN) No. 08/2007. However, swine toxicology studies warn that when the co-occurrence of multiple toxins, such as those produced by Fusarium, is detected, even at “legal” levels, they are already sufficient to cause subclinical losses in weight gain, immunosuppression, and changes in intestinal permeability in pigs.
Aiming to efficiently tackle this nutritional challenge, Trouw Nutrition Brasil highlighted the technologies that make up TOXO-HP during Swine Vision 2026. According to animal scientist Daniel Miranda, an animal nutrition specialist and Global Technical Manager of Trouw Nutrition’s Mycotoxin Risk Management Program, the solution is a response to the growing challenge of simultaneous exposure to multiple toxins, including those produced by Fusarium—such as fumonisins, zearalenone, and deoxynivalenol (DON)—which are common in commercial feed. These toxins often act synergistically, compromising animals’ immunity, intestinal integrity, liver and kidney functions, as well as reproductive performance, without necessarily showing visible clinical signs.
The animal scientist notes that the TOXO-HP formulation combines four complementary mechanisms to address biological damage in pigs: targeted enzymatic biodegradation (focused on fumonisins), adsorption by smectite bentonite, and the inclusion of ingredients intended to support intestinal health and strengthen the immune system. In scientific studies, the additive has been shown to help maintain reproductive performance in sows—contributing to an increase in the number of live-born piglets—reduce the specific fumonisin biomarker (sphinganine/sphingosine ratio - Sa:So) approved by EFSA, and mitigate changes in liver enzymes in piglets.
The new additive is part of Trouw Nutrition’s Mycotoxin Risk Management Program, which structures decision-making in the field and at feed mills in four sequential steps: rapid detection upon receipt of raw materials, laboratory confirmation via LC-MS/MS, data interpretation through the NutriOpt digital platform, and a customized solution in the feed. “The strategy aims to support nutritionists, veterinarians, and managers in containing silent productivity losses and ensuring the profitability of the business,” the expert concludes.
