Aragon was ranked as the European Union region with the largest pig population, with 9,4 million animals in December 2025, according to data published by Eurostat in its 2026 edition of the Regions of Europe report.

Among the European regions with the largest pig populations are also Catalonia, with 8,3 million animals, followed by Brittany, in France, with 6,4 million.

The data highlight the high territorial concentration of Spanish pig production. Aragon and Catalonia together accounted for 52,7% of Spain's total pig population in December 2025.

A similar situation can be seen in Germany, another of the European Union's leading pork producers. In this case, Lower Saxony had 7,2 million pigs and North Rhine-Westphalia had 5,9 million. Together, these two regions accounted for 60,7% of Germany's pig population.

Eurostat also highlights Denmark's specialisation in pig production. Midtjylland was the Danish region with the largest number of animals, with 4,3 million pigs.

Across the European Union, the pig population is expected to reach 131,5 million animals in 2025.
