Originally from Hungary, the Mangalica is a hardy breed, recognizable by its long, curly bristles. Slow-growing and characterized by a high intramuscular fat content, it is particularly prized for producing high-quality cured meats.

In Italy, it is raised mainly on small and medium-sized farms in the Centre-South, often using extensive or semi-extensive systems.

The ANAS program, approved by decree of 13 October 2026, provides for the registration and certification of breeding animals, but not for genetic selection activities or access to public grants.
