The International Symposium on Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus and other Swine Viruses (IPRRS 2026) has concluded with great success in terms of participation and scientific content. This event has become a unique platform for the exchange of knowledge, collaboration, and innovation in the field of viral diseases in swine.
An outstanding scientific program and broad international representation
IPRRS 2026 presented a scientific program that included key areas such as virology, pathogenesis, immunity, diagnostics, and epidemiology. The international round table on PRRS control and eradication was particularly significant, with experiences from Denmark, the United States, and China shared and the main obstacles to effectively controlling this disease discussed.

Although PRRS remained the central topic of the meeting, the symposium broadened its focus to address other viral diseases with a major impact, such as African swine fever virus, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, influenza virus, and other emerging or re-emerging viruses of global significance. This broader perspective reflects the complexity of the health challenges currently facing the swine industry.
Scientific rigor and quality were the main highlights of the congress. The event featured a panel of leading international experts and included more than 100 scientific contributions, comprising 16 invited presentations, oral communications, flash talks, and poster presentations.
The congress brought together delegates from 32 countries in Europe, Asia and America. The strong Spanish participation is particularly noteworthy, clearly reflecting the interest in these diseases in our country.

Pre-event day for the national audience
As a prelude to the international symposium, a day entitled "The Importance of Health in Pig Production" was held. At this pre-symposium, jointly organised with Anaporc and Anavepor, more than 100 professionals gathered to review practical tools for addressing two priority challenges for the sector: biosecurity—particularly relevant in the context of African swine fever—and PRRS control. The day was organised as a series of round-table discussions and included a dedicated presentation on the costs associated with PRRS and its control in Spain.
Industry support
The organisation of IPRRS 2026 was made possible thanks to the strong support of the industry, led by the "Gold" sponsors (ADA, Boehringer Ingelheim, HIPRA, MSD Animal Health, Syva, Zoetis and ThermoFisher Scientific), the "Silver" sponsors (AAF International, AM Animalia, Gold Standard Diagnostics, IDVet and SAN VET), and the "Bronze" sponsors (APC, Calier, Ceva, IDEXX, Topigs Norsvin), with 3three3 collaborating as the main Media Partner. In addition, Alivira, Fatro and Olmix acted as co-sponsors of the pre-event day. The support of Boehringer Ingelheim and IDEXX for the next generation of researchers is also noteworthy, as they facilitated their attendance by sponsoring travel grants. Boehringer Ingelheim also sponsored the awards for the congress's best presentations.
Next edition
IPRRS 2026 has concluded, but interest in the disease continues. To close the symposium, Professor Hanchun Yang of China Agricultural University announced that the next edition of IPRRS will be held in China in 2029.
