Today, the national live hog market continued its post-holiday pattern of low-level fluctuations. Prices were generally steady, with slight regional divergence. In some production areas of East and Central China, asking prices were slightly stronger due to farmers' reluctance to sell and active transportation. Southwest and Northeast China were relatively weaker. Supply and demand in the Hunan market were basically balanced, with no significant price fluctuations and no distinct local drivers for either an increase or a decrease. On the supply side, large-scale farms have gradually resumed their post-holiday marketing pace. Hog supplies from earlier delayed sales and secondary fattening are still being absorbed, and overall market supply remains ample. Slaughterhouse operating rates are low, pork carcass sales are average, and frozen product inventories are relatively high, placing some constraint on a rebound in hog prices. On the demand side, post-holiday dining and tourism consumption have declined, leaving short-term end-user demand subdued. However, as the weather turns cooler, preserved-meat stocking in the south may gradually begin, while some secondary fattening operations may enter the market at lower prices, providing support for a floor in hog prices. Overall, hog prices are expected to continue fluctuating within a narrow range at low levels in the short term. Ample supply and subdued consumption will limit increases, while expectations of state purchases and storage, farmers' reluctance to sell, and potential restocking activity will provide a floor against declines. Farmers are advised to maintain realistic expectations and schedule sales in batches based on their financial circumstances and hog weights, avoiding excessive holding in the hope of a future market rally.
