Recently, a pig farmer asked about newborn piglets being unable to stand. Today,猪好多the editor will answer that question here.
1, newborn piglets that do not get enough nutrition: if several hours have passed and a piglet still has not suckled, it will naturally be hungry and will certainly be unable to stand. It may also show a clearly splayed-leg stance. This should be distinguished from pseudorabies, discussed below. After the piglets are born, first squeeze out two drops of milk, as it contains more pathogens, and then let the piglets suckle. If they cannot get milk, they naturally will not be able to stand. Only beginners make this mistake.
2. Illnesses, such as pseudorabies or mycotoxins, can also cause weakness in the hind legs or even splayed legs. Check the vaccines and feed. A calcium deficiency can cause this too.
3. Piglets can also be very cold, especially at the current temperature. Temperatures in smallholder pig farms are too low, but some pig farmers are not constrained by their facilities—they simply do not know to turn on the heat lamp before the piglets are born, since the nest also needs to be warmed up. Next, here is how to tell whether the temperature is right for the piglets.
A. If all the piglets huddle under the lamp, the temperature is too low. Usually, you need a 200-250-watt lamp and should lower it a little.
B. If all the piglets move away and do not stay under the lamp, the temperature is too high. Switch to a smaller bulb or raise it a little.
The electricity bill is not the problem. The real issue is that if piglets catch a cold, get diarrhea, or even die from splayed legs because they are cold, the losses will be significant.
When you first start raising sows, you should pay extra attention. Keep track of breeding dates, and prepare the warming box and heat lamp three days in advance. It is also best to have potassium permanganate solution for disinfection and anti-inflammatory medication ready. Don’t wait until the piglets are born to realize you haven’t prepared anything—piglets can die very quickly in winter.
