The Danish Government wants to promote a new form of pig production with a significantly higher level of animal welfare and greater value creation in Denmark. Until the new regulatory framework is established, a temporary suspension is being introduced on the establishment of new conventional pig farms and the expansion of existing ones.
The executive order aims to ensure that no new conventional pig farms are established and no existing ones are expanded until the conditions governing pig production in the future are established. This framework will be discussed in the upcoming four-party agreement on the pig sector.
The temporary suspension focuses on expansions of production capacity. It will still be possible to obtain permission for changes to farms that could improve animal welfare or have positive effects on the climate or the environment, provided they are not linked to an increase in production capacity or area.
Applications that have already been submitted will be processed under the previous regulations. In these cases, municipalities must consider whether the project could have a significant impact on the environment, nature and landscape values, as well as, among other things, nuisances related to odours, noise and transport.
