Veterindustria organized the workshop entitled “Nutritional Supplements for Companion and Production Animals,” a technical event held in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Generalitat Valenciana and the Community of Madrid. More than 90 experts and representatives of these institutions attended to exchange experiences and information and discuss the challenges facing the sector.
At the welcome to the workshop held yesterday at a hotel in Madrid, Santiago de Andrés, director general of Veterindustria, welcomed the attendees, recalled the representative role of Spain’s animal health and nutrition industry, and highlighted the value of these events to professionals because of their highly technical and practical nature.
For her part, Leonor Algarra, deputy director general of Livestock Production Resources at the MAPA, emphasized the importance of this type of meeting and of the existing collaboration between the various administrations and operators in addressing these issues when she opened the event. This collaboration facilitates regulatory compliance and enables the animal feed sector to move forward.
The first part of the workshop was devoted to a series of presentations by MAPA representatives. It was opened by Marta Pérez, Head of the Animal Feed Risk Assessment Service, who spoke on “Raw materials and additives in nutritional supplements: public consultation tools,” outlining the tools available to operators and authorities. She was followed by Pablo Montañés, veterinary technician with the animal health alert network, who spoke on “Assessment of claims on labeling: self-monitoring and official control tools,” highlighting the importance of controls in ensuring the accuracy of information provided to the end user.
Victoria Navas, Head of the Animal Feed Division, focused on PARNUTS regulations and the EFSA guide, and reviewed legislative developments concerning feed in her presentation entitled “PARNUTS: regulations, required studies and the EFSA guide. Regulatory developments concerning feed.” The MAPA representatives’ session concluded with a presentation by Juan José Ruiz, Head of the Technical Service, on the “Feed alert network: operation, results, self-monitoring and communication,” in which he explained how the alert network operates.
The presentations concluded with Laura Vicente, coordinator of Veterindustria’s Nutritional Supplements Working Group, who spoke on “Veterindustria’s view of nutritional supplements,” explaining the industry’s perspective on the development and regulation of these products.
The second part of the event, moderated by Pablo Hervás, Technical and Public Affairs Director, was devoted to practical cases involving non-compliance identified during official controls. The cases were presented by Covadonga Sánchez, Head of Section and of the Animal Feed Control Program of the Community of Madrid; Nieves Berná, Head of Section for Safety and Control of Agricultural Production at the Generalitat Valenciana; and Silvia Cazorla, veterinary technician with the Animal Feed and Livestock Production Safety Service of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
With events such as this, Veterindustria reaffirms its commitment to technical training, regulatory improvement and institutional collaboration to boost the competitiveness of Spain’s animal health and nutrition industry.
