MALAYSIA OPENS OPPORTUNITY TO IMPORT GOATS AND SHEEP FROM INDONESIA — Illustration 1

The opportunity to export Indonesian goats and sheep to Malaysia has reopened amid interest from businesses in that country in bringing in live livestock. The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) is preparing steps to reopen this export access.

Director of Livestock Product Downstreaming at Kementan, Makmun, said that communication had taken place with Malaysian authorities to discuss export requirements. One transportation option under consideration is the use of the Camara Nusantara livestock vessel to support efficient shipments.

Ahlum Nazar of PT Aliyah Rizq Agriculture said that his company, with support from partner farmers in North Sumatra, could potentially supply around 2.000 goats and sheep. Actual supply will still depend on livestock specifications and readiness to meet applicable requirements.

The Indonesian Sheep and Goat Farmers Association (HPDKI) welcomed the opportunity because it could expand markets, particularly for farmers, especially in Central Java and East Java, who are facing price pressure. Teguh Arif Hidayat of the HPDKI Central Board hopes that export access will eventually be open to all businesses that meet the requirements.

On the other hand, Nuryanto of PT Agro Investama stressed the importance of logistics cost efficiency so that Indonesian livestock can compete in the Malaysian market.

Kementan, together with relevant parties, continues to prepare animal health requirements, supply availability, and transportation facilities. If these aspects are met, exports are expected to open up broader marketing opportunities and strengthen farmers’ bargaining position.
