Mexico: Jalisco pig farmers call for a halt to pork imports — Illustration 1The Regional Union of Pig Farmers of Jalisco expressed concern about the increase in pork imports, which is putting pressure on national and local prices and jeopardizing the profitability and continued operation of thousands of Jalisco producers.

Pig farmers also face high costs for feed, healthcare, energy, and labor, so shrinking margins and economic losses threaten the continued operation of farms and the jobs that depend on them.

For this reason, the sector urgently requests:

  • Review the conditions and volume of imports and their impact on prices and the marketing of domestic production.
  • Assess legally permissible trade measures in response to possible unfair practices or harm to local production.
  • Strengthen health monitoring, traceability, and the safety of imported products.

The organization clarified that it does not seek to obstruct international trade, but rather to ensure that it takes place under fair, transparent, and sustainable conditions, taking the entire pork production chain into account.

The appeal was signed by Héctor del Toro Torres, president of the Regional Union of Pig Farmers of Jalisco.
