Daniela Álvarez, Sustainability Manager, and María Ignacia Essedin, Sustainability Analyst at ChileCarne, made a technical visit to Brazil between 11 and 18 October to learn about innovation, automation, and circular economy initiatives in pig farming. The visit was part of the project “Characterization of food losses in Chile”, promoted by the ArticuLAC community of practice.
The delegation visited FRIMESA, one of the most modern pig slaughter plants in Latin America, recognized for its high level of automation.
“Understanding how other countries are making better use of their resources, turning waste into new opportunities, and incorporating advances in robotization gives us concrete ideas for continuing to make progress in sustainability”, Álvarez noted.
The representatives also visited Primato, a group of producers that, in partnership with MWM, is developing a pilot plant to validate business models, such as the small-scale production of organomineral fertilizers, biogas, and biomethane.
In Chile, according to information released by ChileCarne, coverage of pig manure treatment increased from less than 40%, at the end of the 1990s, to more than 95% today.
Essedin evaluated the exchange as “a very fruitful and enriching visit”, which helped broaden the perspective on challenges related to sustainability and innovation.
