Pork production in Mexico reached 1.3 million tons from January to September 2026, an increase of 10.4 % compared with the same period of the previous year, according to the Mexican Pork Producers Organization (OPORMEX).
With these results, the organization proposed to the Secretariats of Economy and of Agriculture and Rural Development a gradual import substitution plan, with verifiable annual targets, the development of domestic suppliers, and industry purchasing commitments. The sector says it can supply up to 70 % of the domestic market in 2030, in line with Plan Mexico.
For 2026, growth of close to 10 % is forecast, triple the average for the last decade, in a year when the price of live hogs fell by as much as 30 %.
OPORMEX noted that, from April to August, imports under PACIC totaled 29 754 tonnes, 58 % of the authorized volume, all from Brazil. The average import price for pork chops and loin was 39.68 pesos per kilogram, compared with 110 pesos at the consumer level, 185 % higher.
The organization demanded that support for the sector be put into practice through a plan with verifiable targets and deadlines.
