• In its five-year plan 2026–2030, China aims to increase grain production capacity to 725 million tonnes in 2030.
  • The priority is to maintain self-sufficiency and a stable grain supply, while placing greater emphasis on soybeans, oilseed crops, cotton and sugar.
  • Agricultural technologies are expected to drive higher yields, including water conservation, precision fertilization and smart machinery.

In the new five-year plan for agriculture for 2026-2030, the Chinese government aims to increase grain production capacity to 725 million tonnes. The document provides for maintaining a basic level of self-sufficiency in grain supplies and ensuring a stable supply of major crops.

The authorities are expected to pay particular attention to the production of soybeans, oilseeds, cotton and sugar in order to maintain the country's self-sufficiency at an acceptable level, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China.

How does China plan to achieve 725 million tonnes of grain? Technology and efficiency

China is to increase production efficiency while also developing and implementing technologies for water conservation and the precise application of fertilizers and plant protection products, as well as promoting an environmentally friendly production model.

Technology is to be the key to success, as higher yields are also expected to result from the development and distribution of new high-yielding plant varieties and the widespread use of intelligent agricultural machinery and all kinds of digital solutions.

Currently, technology contributes more than 64% to the growth of China’s agricultural production.

China’s grain production: baseline and target for the year 2030.

In 2025, grain production in China amounted to approximately 714,9 million tons and exceeded 700 million tons for the second consecutive year. Thus, the target for 2030 is to further increase production capacity by another 10 million tons.
