The Iberian pig sector in Extremadura is optimistic about the upcoming acorn season, thanks to the abundant production observed in the pastures (dehesas) and expectations of prices slightly higher than those of last season. However, how weather conditions develop over the coming weeks will be crucial to confirming these forecasts.

After a rainy winter and an exceptionally long, hot summer, the holm oaks and cork oaks are producing a large quantity of acorns. Even so, the sector believes that regular autumn rains are essential to promote the development and maturation of the acorns.

Pablo Aguirre, technical secretary of the Spanish Association of Iberian Pig Breeders (AECERIBER), recommends caution at the start of the season, despite the initially positive outlook. He explains that the trees have a substantial crop of acorns, but need autumn rains for the acorns to develop fully and ensure a successful acorn season.

Market expectations are also favorable. AECERIBER expects prices for acorn-fed Iberian pigs to be slightly higher in the coming months than those recorded last year.

Aguirre emphasizes that the expected increase would not be very significant, but would be enough to improve producers’ economic outlook.

Therefore, although the initial conditions allow for optimism about the harvest, the sector remains cautious, awaiting developments in weather conditions, particularly rainfall, which should favor the ripening of the acorns.
